Welcome
This website has been created for beginner primary teachers who are working in the middle to upper primary years (years 3 to 6). It is a web resource providing information on reading comprehension and how best to teach it.
While much teacher attention in the primary years is directed towards teaching students how to read texts, it is widely argued that not enough attention is directed towards teaching students how to comprehend texts. As such, we are constantly seeing that while it may appear that students are able to read well, they may not be able to fully understand the text that they are reading.
This site will provide you, the new teacher, with information and resources that will 1) aid your understanding of the importance of teaching reading comprehension, and 2) assist you in teaching effective reading comprehension through skills and strategies. By providing your students with the right skills and strategies you are empowering them to not only be able to read texts at varying levels of difficulty, but also to be able to truly understand the content of a certain text, make meaning from this text, and apply that meaning to their own lives.
To get the most out of this site, please view each section and try to incorporate given suggestions in your own teaching. As a beginner teacher, you have the opportunity to experiment with different ideas and strategies to find the ones that work best for you and get the best results for your students.
